Ugh.

It's been a long time since I've gone shopping in a mainstream grocery store for anything other than food. This past weekend I went to the local grocery store in the small town where we were staying for a long weekend, I needed a few things since I had forgotten half the ingredients that I needed to make lentil burgers.

This particular grocery store has been surprising me with their increased stock of organic foods these past few years, and this time was no exception. I was able to find organic lentils in the bulk section, Bob's Red Mill wheat germ, and even nutritional yeast (which I didn't need, but was surprised to see).

The other thing on my list that I needed was bread crumbs. Unfortunately, there were no organic brands available but there were 4 other brands, so I started checking out the ingredients. I was dismayed and shocked to read the HUGE lists on the backs of these bread crumbs cartons, especially that they contained HFCS (high fructose corn syrup). Are you kidding me?!? HFCS in bread crumbs? Why?

Needless to say, I did not buy bread crumbs. I ended up substituting crushed cashew nuts (which were delicious). The husband found some BBQ sauce and happily put that on his lentil burgers, until I read that list of ingredients and also found HFCS. Then he switched to ketchup. Okay, though, HFCS kinda makes sense in BBQ sauce, being liquid-y and all, but I still cannot wrap my mind around finding it in bread crumbs.

What has this world come to?

Pieces of Peace

Making peace with yourself doesn't always come easily.

Sometimes it comes in bits and pieces.

Working on it.
